Judge's Statement
TT Tung's work appears simple at first glance, but is anything but. The repeating pattern that gives To Hear Beyond an added sparkle is actually painted onto the canvas using multiple colors. Here and there, the pattern is absent or painted over completely. The strings on the violin lack the pattern, but are painted in variegated colors. The violin crosses the canvas in a strong diagonal. The bow, crossing at an opposing angle, seems poised, ready to stroke the strings.
The paintings of Josef Jobst are still, somber, and introspective. It's as though we're laying in a field, peering around us at the grasses, which are magnified in scale through our proximity. The vertical lines create a sense of stillness. Only an occasional soft angle or sweeping curve disturbs the peace. I find Butter Marsh Marigold especially intriguing because we've been given an unusual area of focus--not the expected marigold itself but its veined leaves, which have the sharpest lines and strongest detail. The rest of the painting fades into a dreamy haze.
I've always been drawn to primitive art, so it's not surprising that I found myself attracted to the work of Cindy Silvert. She has worked with the most primitive of images--the simplified human face. Her images have a masklike quality, and are constructed by applying layers of paint and line one atop another. In Mediterannean Dream, the disturbingly red lips are marked by scraffito. Does this mask depict an evil force, whose words can't be trusted? Or instead a warning?
